Bamboo has a clean and cool presence
This material stretches straight towards the sky yet has some flexibility, making it both strong and flexible.

Wickerwork ceiling

The woven ceiling, made of thin boards woven in an alternating pattern, is a traditional ceiling finish in Japanese architecture. The square woven ceiling, which flares out from the center on all four sides, is rare, and was assembled in multiple sections and woven by craftsmen on site. To match the small scale of the single-story house and the low ceiling size, the woven ceiling was made of cedar boards rather than bamboo.

Bamboo wall

Visitors are welcomed by walls clad in roasted soot-covered bamboo that matches the color of the burnt cedar exterior.

Entrance push bar

The entrance handle, which is the first thing visitors touch, is made of bleached bamboo so that they can experience the refreshing feel of bamboo before entering the building.

Chochiku Garden

Sound takes center stage in this garden, where the rustling of bamboo leaves, the murmuring of the Oita River, and the delicate sounds of water from the Suikinkutsu create melodies that can only be experienced here.

Japanese paper

To bring out the flexibility and luster of the bamboo, Echizen washi paper, which has a delicate, smooth and undulating texture, is pasted on the walls.

Rock bath

In keeping with the Japanese garden technique of contrasting things that change with things that don't, the open-air bath uses rocks, an unchanging material, to contrast with the ever-changing trees and water. While bathing in Kami no Yu, you can gaze upon Mount Yufu, which changes shape every day but continues to exist unchanged.
